Dominguez-Huerta duo moving on at state

A San Luis doubles team is still in the 5A-II state tennis tournament after the first weekend of action.

Fourth seeded Julissa Dominguez and Ariana Huerta enjoyed a first round bye before beating a not as talented Kingman team 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.

San Luis put away Skyline 6-4, 6-2 in the third round on Saturday. Dominguez and Huerta were the only Sidewinders to advance past the second round in the single elimination tourney.

"The challenging match was between Skyline," San Luis coach Sonya Escalante said.

She said her girls were surprised at how well the Mesa team worked at the net. But the Sidewinders fixed their mistakes and eliminated opportunistic short balls and keep the Coyotes away from the net.

"They've been playing their best game ever," Escalante said. "they are communicating the whole time they are playing. If they make a mistake they make sure to fix it."

Next Friday, Dominguez and Huerta take on Deer Valley in the fourth round. A win puts them in the quarterfinals.
